Why a Midweek Fall Getaway to Harbor Country Just Makes Sense

Weekends get all the glory, but if your schedule has even a little flexibility, Monday through Thursday might be one of the best times to experience Harbor Country, Michigan in the fall.

The Lake Michigan shoreline feels quieter. The pace around New Buffalo slows down. You have more room to explore wineries, trails, shops and neighboring Harbor Country communities without feeling like everyone else had exactly the same idea.

And in fall, when the whole point is to slow down and enjoy the season, that feels pretty perfect.

Here’s why your next fall getaway to Harbor Country might be better in the middle of the week.

More Lake Michigan, Fewer People

One of the best parts of visiting Harbor Country during fall is experiencing Lake Michigan after the height of summer. Come during the week and that slower feeling becomes even more noticeable.

Grab coffee and walk along the shoreline. Watch the waves from the beach. Catch sunset without feeling like you need to turn it into an entire event.

You don't need swimming weather to enjoy Lake Michigan.

Sometimes a sweatshirt, an empty stretch of sand and nowhere you need to be afterward are better anyway.

Fall turns an ordinary drive through Southwest Michigan into part of the vacation.

The roads connecting New Buffalo, Union Pier, Lakeside, Harbert, Sawyer and Three Oaks wind through wooded areas and countryside that come alive with fall color. Instead of rushing from one attraction to another, give yourself an afternoon to wander.

Midweek is especially suited to this kind of trip because there doesn't need to be a schedule.

See a road that looks pretty? Take it.

Find a shop you haven't visited before? Stop.

Decide you want lunch before continuing? Even better.

Give Wine Country an Entire Afternoon

A fall afternoon at a Southwest Michigan winery feels considerably better when you're not watching the clock.

Harbor Country and the surrounding countryside offer wineries, tasting rooms, breweries, cider and farm stops that make an easy day trip from New Buffalo.

Choose a couple of places rather than trying to visit everything. Take your time over a tasting. Explore the countryside between stops. Pick up a bottle to bring back to your vacation rental.

That's the beauty of a midweek getaway.

You have time.

Explore Harbor Country at Your Own Pace

New Buffalo might be the gateway to Harbor Country, but don't stop there.

Spend a morning browsing downtown New Buffalo, then head toward Three Oaks, Sawyer, Union Pier or Harbert. Explore local shops and galleries, stop for coffee, walk a nature preserve or find somewhere good for lunch.

Harbor Country has nine communities spread along the Lake Michigan shoreline and surrounding countryside, and each has its own personality.

You don't need to see all nine.

Pick a direction and see where the day takes you.

Fall Is Made for Being Outside

Cooler temperatures make fall one of the easiest seasons to explore Southwest Michigan outdoors.

Walk the trails at Galien River County Park. Explore one of Harbor Country's nature preserves. Head toward Warren Dunes. Bring a bike. Take a long walk near Lake Michigan.

Then come back to the house, change into something comfortable and decide whether you're going back out.

Or don't.

That's vacation too.

Your Vacation Rental Gets to Be Part of the Vacation

This might be our favorite argument for staying a little longer.

When you're only somewhere for a packed weekend, the vacation rental can become little more than the place you sleep.

Give yourself a few slower days and suddenly the house becomes part of the experience.

Make breakfast. Work remotely for a few hours if you need to. Read on the porch. Cook dinner together. Watch a movie. Sit around the fire pit. Open the bottle of Michigan wine you picked up that afternoon.

A Harbor Country vacation rental gives you room to settle in instead of constantly heading to the next thing.

And honestly?

Sometimes doing absolutely nothing for an afternoon is exactly what you came here for.

Turn a Few Vacation Days Into an Actual Vacation

You don't necessarily need an entire week away.

Add a Monday or Thursday to your plans and suddenly a quick getaway feels much longer. Or skip the traditional weekend entirely and spend a few weekdays exploring Southwest Michigan while Harbor Country is moving at a slower pace.

For remote workers, couples with flexible schedules, retirees, parents traveling without kids or anyone sitting on a few unused vacation days, fall is a pretty good excuse to use them.

Your inbox will survive. Probably.

There's Still Plenty to Do During the Week

A quieter Harbor Country doesn't mean an empty Harbor Country.

Restaurants, shops, wineries, outdoor attractions and local businesses continue welcoming visitors throughout fall, although individual hours can change as the season progresses.

Check hours before heading out, especially later in fall, then build your day around whatever sounds good.

Or check what's happening while you're here and discover something you hadn't planned.

Make a Long Weekend Even Longer

Maybe you don't need another packed Saturday.

Maybe what you need is coffee by Lake Michigan on a Tuesday morning.

A scenic drive with nowhere to be afterward.

An afternoon tasting wine.

Dinner at the vacation rental because nobody feels like getting dressed again.

A midweek fall getaway to Harbor Country, Michigan gives you all the things people love about this corner of Southwest Michigan with a little more room to actually enjoy them.

Third Coast Vacations offers vacation homes throughout New Buffalo, Harbor Country and Southwest Michigan, giving you a comfortable place to slow down for a few days.

Go ahead. Turn on the out-of-office.
